No, it's not the bald eagle. (That's the official bird of our NATION.) If you knew (or guessed) that DC's official bird is the beautiful songbird known as the wood thrush, you're absolutely right - pat yourself on the back!

Every year, in order to celebrate Earth Day, and spring, and how lucky we are to have such a beautiful bird as our official symbol, I like to read Flute's Journey by Lynne Cherry. It's about a DC-area wood thrush named Flute. Unfortunately, I can't read the book to you this year, as it's stuck in the library and I'm stuck out of the library! However, I was lucky and managed to find this YouTube version that will have to do the trick this year. Click here for Flute's Journey: The Life of a Wood Thrush, and listen up. Then, watch and listen to the video above again 9or for the first time, if you didn't already). So maybe now you have a good idea why Lynne Cherry might have entitled her book FLUTE'S Journey!

Enjoy your Earth Day, which is coming up on Wednesday, April 22nd. And keep an eye and ear out for the wood thrush and its song - unfortunately harder and harder to see or hear in our area due to deforestation and related habitat loss.
